The old mill on the edge of Clogher Valley

collapses in a storm, revealing a buried stone

circle beneath the earth. The local priest warns

of the site’s cursed history, but the farmer,

Seán, ignores the talk. He has no time for

ghosts—his fields are failing, his son has left

for Dublin, and the council threatens to seize

his land.

A stranger arrives at the farm gate, hat low,

coat worn thin. No name is given, only a folded

note slipped into Seán’s hand: “The field

remembers.” The next morning, Seán finds the

stone circle glowing faintly under moonlight.

When he touches it, the ground shifts, and a

woman steps out of the earth—her face

halffamiliar, her voice echoing from decades ago.

The woman claims she was Seán’s greataunt,

killed during the Civil War for refusing to

swear allegiance to either side. Her spirit

lingers because the land was never properly

claimed, and the council’s papers are invalid.

The stranger, now revealed as a man in a

weathered suit, offers a deal: help reclaim the

land by playing a game of fake courtship with

the woman’s descendant, a lawyer in Dublin who

holds the legal title.

Seán agrees, though he resents the charade. He

meets the woman’s descendant, Eileen, at a pub

in Rathfarnham. They pretend to be lovers,

attending events, exchanging letters, and

feigning affection. But the deeper they play,

the more the past interferes. Eileen’s family

home begins to rot, her clients vanish, and the

stranger watches from the shadows, offering

cryptic advice.

A rule emerges: the land cannot be won through

truth, only through illusion. If Seán reveals

the truth, the curse will claim him. If he lies

too long, the woman’s spirit will possess him.

The pressure builds when Eileen discovers the

real reason for their arrangement. She confronts

Seán, demanding the truth. He hesitates, then

breaks the charade.

The stone circle erupts. The woman’s spirit is

drawn into Eileen, who collapses, unconscious.

The stranger vanishes. The council cancels the

land seizure. Seán’s fields revive, but the cost

is clear: the woman’s voice lingers in his

dreams, and Eileen walks away, her mind

fractured by the encounter.

The valley sleeps again, but the stone circle

waits.
