The postman’s bicycle bell rings twice at dawn.
The village wakes to the same stone walls, the
same moss on the gatepost, the same silence that
has not shifted since 1916. She steps off the
bus with a suitcase heavier than the last time
she left. The air smells of peat and salt, and
the sea is the same color as when she was a girl.
The priest’s widow invites her to tea, but the
house is empty except for the photograph of a
man in a military uniform. She does not ask who
he is. The old well behind the pub is now sealed
with a metal lid. No one speaks of the children
who vanished in the 1920s, or the ones who came
back different.
She finds the fairy doctor’s cottage at the edge
of the bog. The door is unlocked. Inside, a
ledger lists names and dates, all ending in the
same month. A single candle burns. She touches
the page and feels a pull, like the tide drawing
back from the shore.
The villagers gather at the crossroads. They do
not speak, but their eyes follow her. A boy runs
past with a sack of potatoes, his face streaked
with dirt. She sees the same pattern in his gait
as the men who walked the fields during the War
of Independence—shoulders hunched, head down, as
if carrying a weight no one else can see.
At midnight, the ground shifts. The bog opens a
few feet, revealing a tunnel lined with carved
stones. The fairy doctor’s journal falls from
her bag. It describes a ritual: to leave, one
must give up a piece of the self. To return, the
piece must be reclaimed. But the price is not
what she expected.
She steps into the tunnel. The air is cold,
thick with the scent of wet earth and something
older. The walls pulse faintly. A voice whispers
in a language she almost understands. She
reaches the end and finds a mirror. Her
reflection is not hers. It smiles, then begins
to bleed.
The villagers find her at dawn, standing at the
edge of the bog. The mirror is gone. Her hands
are stained with black soil. She says nothing.
The priest’s widow looks away. The boy with the
potatoes stops running. The sea is still the
same color.
